Tuesday, July 27 Great day today - closer to home, and saw a humpback and a pod of Atlantic white-sided dolphins! Also got lots of plankton in our plankton tow. Monday, July 26 We stayed in today due to rough seas. Sunday, July 25 Today we got to see the rarest whale in our area - the North Atlantic right whale, and we saw 3 of them! Saturday, July 24 Spent the afternoon on Jeffreys Ledge, and got amazing looks at some bluefin tuna and a giant fin whale! Friday, July 23 Had to travel a bit today, but were rewarded with sightings of humpback whales! Thursday, July 22
Wednesday, July 21 Another great day, and the reported thunderstorms never did materialize! Got great looks at a minke whale, then a fin whale (second-largest species on Earth) and then wonderful looks at a humpback who surfaced right off the boat a couple times! There were other whales around, too - plenty of life around, come join us! Tuesday, July 20 Saw the humpback "Diablo" and her calf today! We also saw a couple minke whales. Another nice day on the water! Sunday, July 18 Another beautiful day on the Gulf of Maine. Had a great pod of Atlantic white-sided dolphins today, and a total of 5 humpbacks. We got terrific looks at 2 of the humpbacks, a 2-year old named "Vault" and an unknown whale, who came very close to the boat and afforded us great views of their magnificent flukes! Lots of bird species and plenty of tuna jumping added to the excitement. Join us this week!
Boy, was it nice and cool on the water today!! Lots of tuna splashing around, and plenty of seabirds (northern gannets, petrels, terns and greater, sooty and manx shearwaters). Whales were a bit scarcer but we did get some terrific looks at a 1-year old humpback who's known for now as the 2009 calf of Siphon. Siphon is a female first sighted in 1992. It's always exciting to see last year's calves return, weaned from their mothers, and apparently happy and healthy! Friday, July 16 Had to travel a bit today, but spent some quality time with humpback whale 'Diablo' and her calf! Thursday, July 15 A great day on the water - sightings seem to be picking up! Had a 'grand slam' - saw all 4 of our most common whale species, which is unusual. Saw a humpback, fin whale, minke and a pod of about 50 Atlantic white-sided dolphins. Join us soon and check them out for yourself! Wednesday, July 14 Weather kept us in today - see you tomorrow!
Today, we were kept very busy with 100 campers from UNH! The kids had fun, asked ALOT of questions and also got a bit wet! During the trip, we spotted a humpback whale and the second-largest species on Earth - a fin whale! On our way home our volunteer Michelle Olson, a 10 year marine docent from UNH, got a great sample of plankton for the kids to look at. Lots of copepods in the sample but we also found some plastic in there, which was disturbing. It has been said in some oceans of the world there is more plastic in the water than plankton!
Start now by refusing plastic bags and buying a reusable water bottle made of stainless steel to help the marine enviornment! Monday, July 12 We traveled a bit today, but were rewarded with the sight of a mother humpback and her young calf! Sunday, July 11
Saturday, July 10 We stayed in today due to rough seas. Join us next time! Friday, July 9 Today was a hot one on the water! We saw a humpback, who was obviously feeding. It's always great to get looks at these whales, who are about the size of a school bus! Thursday, July 8 Today the whales were doing some exploring of their own. We headed out with the sun and warm breezes and found a fin whale, second-largest species on Earth, who came very close to the boat! Wednesday, July 7 It was a perfect day on the ocean, with a nice, cool breeze! Great pod of about 50-60 Atlantic white-sided dolphins, plus a fin whale and a humpback! Tuesday, July 6 Saw several whales today, including one of our favorite humpbacks, Filament! Also saw a fin whale mom and her calf and 3-4 minke whales. A great day on the water! Monday, July 5
We also had the great sighting of a mom/calf fin whale, a minke whale and a harbor seal. Join us this week and beat the heat and humidity on shore! Sunday, July 4
Then we spent time with a humpback, who was apparently feeding, as it kept coming up to the surface with water cascading out of its mouth (meaning it likely had a mouthful of fish).
As we headed home, we saw yet another humpback and fin whale - plenty of life around and a boat is the best place to be during this hot weather - why don't you join us?
Saturday, July 3 A thrilling day on the water! Plenty of whales around - we ended
We haven't identified that humpback, but the next one was a young whale currently known as 'Anvil's 2009 calf.' This whale was feeding busily, too. All in all, a great day - and we were nice and cool out on the water while folks were sweltering on land. Join us soon! Friday, July 2
Thursday, July 1 We started off the month of July with another gorgeous day and lots of whales! Again, fin whales were plentiful, and we were astounded by one whale in particular, who afforded us great looks right next to the boat! Then we spent time with a 1-year old humpback (last year's calf of Anvil), who was doing some lunge-feeding close to the surface. We got great looks at the whale's magnificent tail many times as it dove down. The weather is looking great for tomorrow and the weekend - make your reservation now and come join us! Wednesday, June 30 What a perfect day on the water! Calm seas, light breezes and beautiful sunny weather made for a great afternoon of whale watching! There was plenty of life out there, too, including 5 fin whales, a couple minke whales, and two humpbacks hanging out side-by-side near the boat! Lots of tuna splashing around, also - giving us lots to look at along the way.
Today was a terrific day of whale watching! A fantastic day weather wise, and a great variety of life out there. We started the day with a minke whale who gave us some nice close looks. Further out a nice juvenile harbor seal spent some time with us. Then it was fin whale city! There were blows from these animals all around us! One of our fin whales came up and gave us a close approach - it's always amazing to be that close to the 2ND largest whale in the world. But the day got even better. We had a very active humpback whale - this animal breached 19 TIMES! This behavior does not happen often, so our passengers were left with an experience I hope they will never forget - I know I won't! |
